If you want a sweet pudgie pie that’s easy to make, start with a can of your favorite flavor of pie filling. Add two slices of bread along with softened butter and you have all the ingredients you need to make a delicious sweet sandwich that’s the perfect ending to any camping meal.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EACH SANDWICH:
softened butter
2 slices white bread
3-4 tablespoons of your favorite flavor pie filling
Optional: powdered sugar
Directions:
Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice, butter side up, in pudgie pie maker. Dollop on about 3 tablespoons pie filling, covering the bread almost to the edge.
Cover with second slice of bread, placing it butter side up.
Close pie iron and cook sandwich over glowing embers fire or hot coals until bread is golden brown.
Optional: sprinkle with powdered sugar before eating.
Note: Let the sandwich cool a minute or two before eating. The pie filling can get really hot and a burned tongue is never fun.
My favorite pie filling flavors: cherry, apple, raspberry, lemon, blueberry, blackberry and peach

The very first pudgie pie I ever had was one made with cherry pie filling so it holds a special place in my heart and in my tummy! I can still remember how great it tasted. Since then I’ve been hooked on pudgie pies of both the sweet and savory kind. I love them so much that I no longer reserve them for camping trip meals. Sometimes I’ll start a fire in my fire pit at home, dig out my pudgie pie makers, and indulge in pudgie pies galore.
If you’re a first time pudgie pie maker, try this one. There’s just a couple ingredients and is super easy to make.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EACH SANDWICH:
softened butter
2 slices white bread
3 tablespoons cherry pie filling (approximately)
cinnamon
Optional: powdered sugar
Directions:
Generously butter one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice, butter side down, in pudgie pie maker. Spoon on about 3 tablespoons cherry pie filling, covering the bread almost to the edge (I open a can of pie filling, grab a tablespoon from my silverware stash, and plop 3 spoonfuls on the bread). Sprinkle with cinnamon.
Cover with second slice bread, placing it butter side up.
Close pie iron and cook over glowing embers fire or hot coals until bread is toasty golden brown.
Sprinkle with powered sugar before eating if desired.
Note: If you are using up a can of pie filling that has been refrigerated, set it out for 10-15 minutes to take the chill off it before making the sandwich so that the filling gets warm before the bread burns.

When I’m craving a fast food fix, my first choice is a chili cheese hot dog from Dairy Queen. Since there aren’t any Dairy Queens near any of the campgrounds I camp at, I decided to create my own pudgie pie version of the sandwich that is now my very favorite pudgie pie.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EACH SANDWICH
softened butter
2 slices white bread
1 hot dog (Hebrew National is my hot dog of choice)
Hormel Chili without beans (or with beans if you prefer)
1 slice Velveeta cheese or a slice of American cheese (can substitute a couple tablespoons shredded cheddar cheese if you want)
Diced sweet onion to taste, or any fresh onion you have
Optional: ketchup and/or mustard
Directions:
Place hot dog on a stick and grill over the fire (This first step is optional but I don’t recommend skipping it because I think it makes the sandwich taste a lot better). Set it aside to get cool enough to slice into bite size pieces without burning your fingers.
While the hot dog is cooling a little, butter one side each of 2 slices of bread.
Place one slice, butter side up, in pudgie pie maker.
Layer on the bite size pieces of hot dog (use the whole hot dog), 2-3 tablespoons of the canned chili, onion, and cheese.
Cover with second slice of bread, placing it butter side up.
Close pudgie pie maker and cook over hot coals or glowing embers fire until the bread is toasty golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Serve with ketchup and/or mustard for dipping if desired.

Take just about any kind of cheese, put it between two slices of bread, grill it to melty gooey goodness and I am the first person in line to eat it.
While the standby of grilled American cheese is still my favorite, I enjoy something a little different every so often.
In this pudgie pie the cheese of choice is Havarti, a mild Danish cow’s milk cheese with a buttery flavor that is widely available. Combining it with sweet yet tart Granny Smith apple slices, a little orange marmalade and cranberry makes a sandwich that could be either the main course or dessert, and is vegetarian friendly.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EACH SANDWICH:
softened butter
2 slices hearty white bread such peasant white
Havarti cheese slices (enough to cover a slice of bread with a single layer of cheese)
Granny Smith apple slices
orange marmalade
whole cranberry sauce, cranberry relish or cranberry chutney
Note: cranberry orange relish can be substituted for the orange marmalade and cranberry relish, chutney or sauce
Directions:
Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice, butter side down, in pudgie pie maker (pie iron). Layer on cheese, apple slices, marmalade and cranberry sauce, relish or chutney (about a tablespoon each of the orange marmalade and cranberry sauce). Cover with second slice of bread, placing it butter side up.
Close pie iron and cook over glowing embers fire or hot coals under bread is toasty brown and cheese is melted.
Optional: serve with extra marmalade or cranberry sauce for dipping.
NOTE: The first time I made this sandwich it was indoors. I was looking for a way to use up cranberry orange relish left over from a holiday dinner. When I made it while camping I didn’t want to have to make relish just to make this sandwich and I couldn’t find it in the store, so I substituted orange marmalade and whole cranberry sauce (the stuff in the can next to the jellied cranberries) and it turned out better than the original (probably because it was cooked outdoors over an open fire).

This is a different take on the traditional ham and cheese sandwich. Instead of Swiss cheese, Brie is used. Mustard gives it some tang and zip; and olive oil give it extra richness.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EACH SANDWICH:
softened butter
2 slices marble rye bread
2 slices deli ham
thinly sliced Brie
olive oil
Dijon mustard
Directions:
Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice, butter side down, in pudgie pie maker (pie iron). Layer on Brie and ham. Drizzle with good quality olive oil and a smear of Dijon mustard. Cover with second slice of bread, placing it butter side up.
Close pie iron and cook over glowing embers fire or hot coals under bread is toasty brown.
Optional: serve with extra mustard for dipping.

Ham, salami, pepperoni, and three kinds of cheese make a pudgie pie that’s hearty and filling; and a meat and cheese lovers delight.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EACH SANDWICH:
softened butter
2 slices sourdough or marble rye bread
1 slice hard salami
1 slice deli ham
Pepperoni slices (one large deli slice or enough smaller slices to make one layer)
sliced red onion
Italian dressing to taste (Kraft Zesty Italian recommended)
1 slice Swiss cheese
1 slice Provolone cheese
shaved Parmesan or American Grana cheese (shave with vegetable peeler)
Directions:
Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice, butter side down, in pudgie pie maker (pie iron). Layer on salami, ham, pepperoni, onion, Italian dressing and cheeses. Cover with second slice of bread, placing it butter side up.
Close pudgie pie maker and cook over glowing embers fire or hot coals until bread is browned and cheese is melted.
Note: This makes a thick sandwich. After getting both sides of the bread lightly browned, remove sandwich from fire and set aside for a few minutes before opening. The residual heat will help make sure the cheese gets melted and the meats get warm. It also helps to bring all the ingredients to room temperature before cooking the sandwich.

Ham, Brie, mustard, mayo, tomato, and those delicious dill pickle slices for sandwiches make a pudgie pie sandwich that’s big on taste.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EACH SANDWICH:
softened butter
2 slices marble rye bread
Dijon mustard to taste
thinly sliced Brie
2 slices deli ham
2 slices tomato
black pepper to taste
2 dill pickle sandwich slices
Mayo to taste
Directions:
Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice, butter side down, in pudgie pie maker (pie iron). Spread with a smear of Dijon mustard. Then layer on brie, ham, tomato, black pepper, and dill pickle slices. Spread mayo on the un-buttered side of the second slice of bread. Place mayo side down on top of first slice of bread.
Close pie iron and cook over glowing embers fire or hot coals until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.
Note about tomato: keep tomato slices near the middle of the sandwich so they don’t overcook and get mushy.

Blueberry pie filling, sliced bananas, cream cheese, and a light sprinkle of brown sugar make this delicious pudgie pie a little different than the typical “slap some pie filling between two slices of bread” pudgie pie recipe.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EACH SANDWICH:
softened butter
2 slices bread (white recommended)
1 1/2 tablespoons light cream cheese (approximately)
sliced banana (about 1/3 of a banana)
3 tablespoons blueberry pie filling (approximately)
brown sugar (about a teaspoon)
Optional: powdered sugar
Directions:
Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice, butter side down, in pudgie pie maker (pie iron). Spread blueberry pie filling on top. Layer on banana slices and sprinkle with brown sugar. Spread cream cheese on un-buttered side of second slice of bread. Place it, cream cheese side down, on top of first slice of bread.
Close pie iron and cook over glowing embers fire or hot coals until bread is golden brown.
Optional: sprinkle finished sandwich with powdered sugar.
Note about banana: Keep banana as close to the middle of the sandwich as possible to prevent it from overcooking and getting mushy.

This is my campfire version of the beef enchiladas served at Taco Bell. They’re not only delicious but are a whole lot quicker meal solution than driving around trying to find a fast food restaurant while camping.
Note: This sandwich works best using a round pudgie pie maker (pie iron) rather than the more common square pudgie pie maker.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR EACH SANDWICH:
softened butter
2 small corn tortillas
2 tablespoons canned refried beans (or a couple tablespoons rinsed and drained pinto beans)
1/4 cup prepared taco meat
1 tablespoon diced onion (fresh, not dehydrated or dried)
2 tablespoons prepared enchildada sauce (Ortega brand recommended)
3 tablespoons Taco flavored cheese blend (Sargento brand recommended)
1 tablespoon Tostitos brand medium salsa con queso (in snack section of store)
Jarred salsa
Directions:
Slightly warm corn tortillas over fire to make them pliable. Butter one side of each tortilla. Place one tortilla, butter side down, in pudgie pie maker (pie iron). Layer on refried beans, taco meat, diced onion, enchilada sauce and cheeses. Cover with second corn tortilla, placing it butter side up.
Close pudgie pie maker. Trim off the excess corn tortilla with a kitchen knife. Cook over glowing embers fire or hot coals until both sides of tortilla are browned and cheese is melted.
Serve with salsa for dipping or warm some of the extra enchilada sauce for a dipper.
